Rain Storage System with a Tipping Bucket (Pluviometer)

Keywords: Arduino, Solidworks, 3D Printing, Circuit Design, Assembly

This project is a demonstration model for rain collecting/drainage system. The system can be used to estimate the precipitation and store the rain water; also, the system will water the garden using the collected water when needed.

There are two parts in the whole system: collecting part and drainage part. On the collecting side, a tipping bucket rain gauge is used to estimate the amount of rainfall and the rain water is collected in a large barrel. On the drainage side, a flexible tube is attached to the water barrel at one end; the other end is open and tied to a string hanging on a motor’s axle, beyond the water level in the barrel. When the humid sensor identifies the environment as dry, indicating watering is needed, the system will drive the motor, changing the height of the open end of the tube. Then it will start releasing the water once the open end reaches the water level in the barrel. When the environment is humid enough, the motor will rotate to the opposite direction, moving the tube back to the initial position, and the watering stops.
